Jimmy Red Corn Grits grown by McConnell Farm
Jimmy Red carries a mysterious past. It was a Native American corn that found its way from Florida, through Georgia, and up to Charleston, South Carolina. Bootleggers found that due to its high sugar content it made an exceptional moonshine/ whiskey and historically that is what it was used for. In the early 2000s the corn almost went extinct when the last bootlegger who was growing it died. However, seed saver Ted Chewning obtained the remaining 2 ears of corn and brought the corn back. It has since seen a resurgence as a prized heirloom corn, popular in restaurants throughout the south.
